Audio Engineers of Detroit: Amplifying What’s Possible

Robin Kinnie always believed in the power of sound — and in the need for more women, especially Black women, behind the microphone and the soundboard. What began as Motor City Woman Radio soon grew into something bigger.

In 2021, Robin and her husband, Mike, opened Audio Engineers of Detroit, a recording studio designed as both a creative space and a training ground. Today, they produce music, podcasts, audiobooks, and film audio — while also teaching youth and adults the skills needed to build careers in an industry where women make up just 5% of audio professionals.

When traditional lenders hesitated, MWF stepped in — providing capital, guidance, and ongoing support to help the studio open and grow.

“They really got our story,” Robin says.

Today, Audio Engineers of Detroit is amplifying voices, opening doors, and creating pathways for the next generation.
